As an Appropriate Body, we also provide NQT training and development alongside the statutory induction.

We provide this training for both primary and secondary NQTs.

Developing Outstanding Newly Qualified Teachers (Secondary and Primary)

This training looks at key areas of classroom practice in greater depth and is updated annually to reflect the current needs and trends in education.  The course will also provide information on the next steps after the NQT year.

Our aim is to encourage newly qualified teachers to be responsible for their own development as a practitioner, share good practice between colleagues in their own school and beyond, and take a proactive approach to their induction year.

The training will be delivered by SLE practitioners from STSA, who will be in regular contact with your NQTs to ensure they are getting the most out of their training and experiences. The course materials will also be made available after each session to all attending NQTs. The sessions will run on different days and vary between am and pm to avoid the same lessons being missed.

Expected outcomes:

NQTs will have a deeper understanding of the expectation of the NQT year and how to meet these expectations. They will also be able to demonstrate where they are able to meet and exceed  The Teachers’ Standards at career level expectations.

Secondary course outline:

  • Session 1 (October): How to survive the NQT year! 
  • Session 2 (November): Behaviour & Rewards
  • Session 3 (January): Challenging the students
  • Session 4 (March): Effective use of data & Enquiry-based learning
  • Session 5 (April): School experience
  • Session 6 (June): Sharing of good practice
  • Session 7 (July): Life after NQT 

Primary course outline:

  • Session 1 (September): Introduction – Getting the most out of the NQT year
  • Session 2 (October): Behaviour for learning
  • Session 3 (November): EAL and SEND in the classroom
  • Session 4 (January): Approaches to planning, feedback and marking 
  • Session 5 (March): Getting the most out of observations
  • Session 6 (May): Moving forward – becoming an RQT
