It can be very confusing working out which of the many routes into teaching to choose!
We work in partnership with local universities to offer a 1-year School Direct course. This combines the best of both academic teaching and hands-on experience in the classroom. You get both the benefits of the support and facilities for students, and the experience of being part of the teaching team in real schools.
Ask yourself what you want out of your training. Make sure you also know what kind of qualification you get at the end - as not all courses offer the same. This is particularly important if you think you might want to teach abroad at some point in the future.
We have tried to explain more below:
What are the different types of qualifications?
Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE):
Must include QTS – this is part of the named award of PGCE.
Masters credits (SHU 60 credits towards a masters – these are portable to other institutions – a full Masters’ is 180 credits).
You will read and write academically at level seven (Masters’ level).
- Recognised in Scotland, Europe, Australia and other countries.
Our School Direct and SCITT programmes offer the PGCE.
Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE):
As above except has 120 Masters’ credits – offered by University of Sheffield to our School Direct trainees working with them.
Post Graduate Certificate:
This is usually awarded in a named subject. It is sometimes in the subject of ‘Education’ and can
mistakenly be called a ‘PGCE’ - which it is not!
It is separate to QTS and does not include QTS – QTS is awarded independently. It includes 60 Masters’ credits – often completed over two years. You will read and write academically at Level 6 and 7 (Masters’ level). But it is not recognised as a teaching qualification by other countries. You sometimes get it if you do not finish a full PGCE course – i.e. you don’t get QTS.
QTS Qualified Teacher Status only:
This is when you achieve QTS with no academic award.
